I think one of the most helpful things Ramelli mentions is how the viewer's eye is typically drawn to the brightest part of the image. This was something I overlooked for a long time, and I had many otherwise strong images ruined by the fact that I had distracting highlights in the wrong place in the image. The placement of highlights in your photo can either make or break it, and using them to your advantage both when you compose the image and when you're post-processing can be quite a powerful tool.
