8 Lessons a Photographer Learned After 8 Years

Photography is a pursuit in which you can always learn something new, improve your craft, or explore new creative avenues. Whether you are new or highly experienced, this excellent video essay features eight lessons a photographer learned in eight years and how they can help you improve your own work.

Coming to you from James Popsys, this great video essay discusses eight things he has learned in eight years. Personally, the most important lesson I have learned is just how crucial consistent practice of all aspects of photography is: whether that is personal projects, maintaining familiarity with your camera, keeping your editing skills in top shape, or more. Whenever I have spent a few weeks away from my camera and I pick it up again, I can feel a noticeable delay and lack of sureness in my handling and creative decisions. Taking my camera out for even just a short walk every few days to keep everything sharp and fresh makes a tremendous difference and helps to ensure that I do not hesitate when the pressure is on and I am handling paid work for clients. Even if you don't have client work on your docket, take your camera out on a consistent basis. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Popsys.
