We live in an age of affordable, high-quality cameras, coupled with the surge in photo-sharing social media sites – so naturally, with it comes a generation of aspiring photographers. Adorama has compiled a list of ways in which those looking to become serious can get started learning photography.
Learn How to Operate Your Camera
First on their list is arguably the most important tip for any aspiring photographer: get to know your camera. It’s imperative that should something go wrong whilst you’re out in the field, you know how to fix it. Familiarize yourself with each and every button on your camera, what it does, and how it changes the way an image looks. You may begin using auto settings, but the sooner you learn how to shoot manual, the more control you will have over your images.
Take Online Courses
The internet contains a plethora of knowledge. The beauty of online courses is being able to teach yourself – at your own speed, in your own time. Dependent on your budget, there are plenty of courses, both free and advanced. Most are broken down into different segments, so if there’s a particular area in which you’re lacking, you can focus primarily on that.
Bring Your Camera Everywhere
Photography is very much a learning-through-doing experience. You can read all the books and take all the courses available, but ultimately it’s about honing your craft through practice. As you shoot more, you will learn from mistakes. One low-pressure way to learn is to carry your camera with you and snap along the way – after all, you never know when the opportunity for your next best shot is going to arise.
