The Benefits of Using a Grid With a Softbox

Softboxes are by far some of the most commonly used lighting modifiers, but they are not perfect. One of the most useful ways you can augment a softbox's functionality is by adding a grid. This excellent video will show you how to use a grid on a softbox and why it will make your work easier and better.

Coming to you from Gavin Hoey with Adorama TV, this great video will show you the benefits of using a grid on a softbox. If you have not seen a grid before, it is just that: interwoven fabric in a pattern that fits over the front of a modifier. The benefit is that this restricts more off-axis rays, thereby narrowing the light's throw and making it easier to control its spill. This is especially important for modifiers that tend to throw light in wider patterns. In some cases, you may not mind the spill, but in others, the extra light can contaminate the image, which is when a grid can save you. If you are currently in lockdown at home and working in a small space, this can be a great way to make your life a bit easier. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Hoey.
