B&H: "What's in Your Bag?" with Headshot Photographer Peter Hurley

We love photography. We love gear. And we love this guy: New York City-based headshot photographer Peter "Shabang" Hurley. So when B&H put out this episode of, "What's in Your Bag?", featuring Peter and his kit, of course we were going to watch and post it with all the same excitement and exuberance that Peter himself puts into everything. Watch as Peter tears through his bag to reveal his set-up while running down what gear he uses and why. Thanks for sharing Peter we hope to see you around the hold'em table again soon.

In this episode of ‘What’s in your Bag?’ headshot photographer Peter Hurley shows us what kind of camera gear he carries with him when he shoots portraits on location. -B&H

There are light meter apps for iPhone :)

Interesting, every video I've ever seen of him shooting, he is using a Phase One. I didn't know he shot Canon.

Actually the camera you saw was a Hasselblad but the new 5D S's insane resolution helps close the gap, making Canon a little more palatteable for medium format shooters.

I can only find the one video right now, but in this one https://fstoppers.com/lighting/download-peter-hurleys-newest-photography..., the camera he uses clearly is clearly marked Phase One 645df+ and that's the only thing I've seen him shoot in the few clips I've seen of his.

Like most of us Peter shoots with anything and everything. So it comes as no surprise that he would be seen with a Phase One at some point. But I know Peter personally and know that he owns/owned a Hassy and used it in his studio for years. :)

Wasn't he the guy that did a paid shill review for the Canon 5ds? Sure seemed like it.

I'm not sure if Peter got paid to jump on the Canon train or not. I'll ask him. If so, good for him. To come so far, in our industry, and get that kind of sponsorship is amazing.

I think it was Profoto that paid him to do a video. I remember when he opened the Profoto light modifiers and all of the diffusion panels were still in a plastic bags. They all had the crises of a just unfold panels :-).

I was surprised to see him uses strobes since until then he seem to only use continues light.

Whats up with the playstation controller?

He has it set up as a Midi input to run through files on capture 1. I belive ther is a video of him in his studio talking about it.

These kinds of videos always make me chuckle.

When you're coming up as a photog, you get slammed over the head with "look kids, it's not about the gear. It's about cultivating your eye. you need to master your gear. you can shoot well on anything. don't worry about gear."

But then cut to videos like these where you check out a real pro's bag.

"THIS is what I need to get the job done" - Peter Hurley ...as he opens a bag with probably over $20,000 worth of gear in it :)

It ain't about the gear kids. Until it is.

People tell new photographers not to worry about their gear so they don't get discouraged that they don't have $50k to drop on stuff. The reality is anyone can do decent work with consumer grade gear, it just may take longer. And time is money.

I had several people look at me like I had grown a second head when I said I ditched all my Canon gear for a mirrorless system because it is half the size/weight.

where can I get this shabang button?! ;)

Peter's back must be killing him if he's carrying all of this in 1 bag! ;-)

You can actually hear the SHABANG button going off at 5.20 when he's handling the 70-200 - hilarious!
you can't stress enough how good the thinktank shapeshifter really is. its one and only disadvantage is that it's so well designed and built that you'll end up loading it up more than your legs can actually support.
