Check Out These Creative Lighting Tricks

Half the fun of artificial lighting is the number of different ways you can experiment with strange effects to embrace your creativity. This great video will show you how you can use common objects to create entrancing lighting effects and eye-catching portraits.

Coming to you from Manny Ortiz, this fun video will show you how you can create interesting portraits using unusual objects; in this case, Ortiz uses a disco ball to create flecks of light across his subject. What is neat about effects like this is that it only takes a slight shift in the angle or position of whatever you are using to create a totally different look, making it easy to generate a lot of different images in just a little time. And of course, while Ortiz is using a disco ball here, you can use a variety of different objects — anything that interacts in light in an interesting way (a prism or a colander come to mind). Take a few minutes to dig through your house or studio for different objects to try out and take an afternoon to experiment a bit! Check out the video above for the full rundown from Ortiz.
