Creating Minimalist Landscape Photographs With Sand Dunes

Right now, a lot of the trends in landscape photography revolve around vibrant, ornate, and complicated images that showcase a multitude of aspects of scene, and while there's certainly nothing wrong with that, there are other styles as well. This great video explores creating minimalist compositions using sand dunes.

Coming to you from Andrew Marr, this great video follows him as he creates minimalist compositions using sand dunes. I personally love such photos, as it's a real challenge to create something compelling using so few elements, and each part of the photo carries all the more weight. Of course, the flip side is that because each element carries so much significance, everything has to be dialed in perfectly and in harmony, which is the fun of the challenge to me. If you've never tried it, I recommend it, as it can really expand your compositional eye and palette. Try taking a longer lens out with you as well to start: it will allow to more easily find a clutter-free composition and zoom in on more abstract elements. Minimalistic photos also often look great in black and white, so try converting them and carefully painting with the light in post.
