Though there are many kinds of filters, the two most commonly used by landscape photographers are neutral density (ND) and polarizing filters. Neutral density filters simply cut down on the amount of light entering the lens, allowing you to increase your shutter speed for creative effects involving the sky or water. There are also graduated neutral density filters, which allow you to balance extreme dynamic range differences between the sky and ground. Polarizing filters are often used to cut down on reflections on water or to bring out more vibrant foliage.
