The tricky thing about posing is that whereas we can assign objective values to technical parameters and settings, posing is a subjective thing in which any one nuance or detail can derail the entire shot. And as such, it helps to have a set of guidelines at hand that you can fall back on so you are not out in the cold when on a shoot. Personally, I recommend finding a few photographers you like and keeping a mood board of portraits they have shot that you enjoy. Use something like Pinterest to catalog the different poses for different types of shoots, and you can easily reference it on your phone or computer whenever you are stuck and need a bit of inspiration.
