Make Your Own Snow Overlays Using the Real Thing

Yes, it can be done completely in Photoshop, but if you're a fan of the real thing or simply enjoy playing in the snow, this fun and easy tutorial will show you how to create an endless supply of snow overlays for your portraits.

I'm a big fan of having a library of overlays, textures, skies, etc. at my disposal, as I never know when an image will call for such a look, and rarely does Mother Nature offer the right conditions when the whim strikes. And while it's definitely possible to create snow overlays using exclusively Photoshop, sometimes, it's fun to break away from your computer and make the real thing. As this video from Irene Rudnyk shows, it's really not all the hard; in fact, the most difficult part is managing to work the shutter and throw snow simultaneously by yourself (grab a remote or use a timer). After that, it just takes a few quick adjustments in Camera Raw and the overlays are ready for use whenever you'd like that look. I know that personally, I always worry about making an entirely artificial effect look real enough, so this is a great alternative, plus you can experiment with the density, distance, and direction of the snow to get the exact look you want.
