The reason photographers love diffused (or soft) light for portraits is because it creates a relatively large source of light relative to the subject. In turn, this reduces the rate at which light falls to shadow, which in turn creates softer edges and contrasts, a look that is generally believed to be flattering for most features. On the other hand, soft light can easily become flat and uninteresting, which is where it takes a more skilled and nuanced hand to shape it in a compelling way without losing its flattering features.
