Using Content-Aware Fill to Easily Remove Objects in Photoshop

Are you stuck in your old ways with Adobe Photoshop? Me too. However, the newly updated Content-Aware Fill tool may be enough to break habits of slow clone stamp methods.

In this video from Greg Benz, he shows us the new Content-Aware Fill tool in detail and how it can be very useful for quickly creating realistic cloning results. Content-Aware Fill was first introduced in Photoshop CS5, but it received an all-new refresh in Photoshop CC 2019 which is shown here. While the legacy version was mostly hit or miss, with more misses than hits, Adobe really got their act together when creating the new tool. I often have been using it to extend the canvas of my images, but for whatever reason I never thought to use it for cloning out objects until now.

It can be uncomfortable having a semi-automated tool do the object removal, perhaps in part because we are so used to the automated tools in Photoshop to not be that great after years and years of letdowns. If anything, the new Content-Aware Fill looks like it could take care of 95 percent of the removal with just a few manual touchups when needed. To me, that's a big enough win to really try and break out of old habits and put more trust into this automated tool.
