Canon Patents Another Extreme Lens

Canon Patents Another Extreme Lens

Canon has been quite aggressive in the development of RF mount lenses, releasing some extreme designs, such as the RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM and the RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM. They seem to have no intentions of slowing down, as another boundary-pushing design has emerged in a recent patent.

The patent features multiple f/1.8 lenses, the most impressive of which is a 150mm f/1.8 design. Such a lens would be an extremely wide aperture for such a focal length and would start to encroach on the sort of designs we see in 200mm f/2 lenses. Currently, the consumer lens with the longest focal length and an aperture wider than f/2 in Canon's lineup is the RF 135mm f/1.8 L IS USM, which has been generally described as superlative. So, despite the impressive design, I doubt they plan on bringing such a similar lens to the market. That being said, I suspect that at some point, we will see a 200mm f/2 lens (or maybe even 200mm f/1.8 if the company wants the bragging rights). Such lenses are popular for indoor sports, close wildlife, and extreme portraiture. Even though we likely won't see a 150mm f/1.8, it is nice to see the company continuing to push the boundaries of design.

Hey Canon, how about a fast wide angle prime of 20mm optimized for astro photography? Odd
that Canon would produce an IR sensor camera for astro but the best lenses in this field are made by Sony and Sigma. Sigma recently set the standard with their 20mm f1.4 DG DN lens made specifically for astro, with correction of peripheral coma and astigmatism. Canon, open up the RF mount to others, make this lens yourself, or continue to blow off this area in your lens lineup.
