Canon Plans to Release Seven New Mirrorless Lenses This Year

Canon is showing no signs of slowing down, as alongside the announcement of the powerful R5 mirrorless camera, they have also announced that seven new RF mirrorless lenses are scheduled for release this year alone, along with two new lens extenders for the mirrorless mount.

Details are a bit scarce at the moment, but the company has said that this year will bring the release of seven new RF lenses, along with matching RF 1.4x and RF 2x extenders. So far, they have announced the RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM, a much more affordable lens (as compared to most other RF lenses) that represents a new take on the classic walk-around lens, offering near-macro capabilities with a maximum magnification of 0.43x at 105mm and a budget price of $399. The company also announced the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM tonight, which extends its classic 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS lens' range to be even more useful, making it a versatile option for lots of scenarios.

Canon has not said what other lenses we can expect, but personally, I would love to see a mix of more affordable options and supertelephoto primes. No matter what, 2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year!

Nice to see that Canon has finally done what was suspected when considering the bulk of the RF lens line; a camera worthy of the pro glass. If the rumored 45MP sensor is really good, it will make it worth having your credit card cry. :-)

As much as I loved my Nikon DSLR's, I can't help but feel more and more like I chose the wrong brand to buy into for the mirrorless era. :/ Sitting here a bit jealous.

Dont worry. New Nikon is on the way... though I must admit new Canon glass looks amazing.

Nikon has already delivered two very good mirrorless cameras (I'd say Canon has delivered none as the ergonomics of the 5 series are broken on the EOS R). I'm very happy with Nikon's excellent and affordable f1.8 S series. All of them can be shot wide open without sacrificing sharpness or contrast, which makes f1.8 more than adequate for almost all photography. Historically f1.2 and f1.4 lenses generally were not at their best until f2 or f2.2.

There's no way I'd want to be paying those RF lens prices.

I was waiting for news on the 100-500, but at F7.1, it’s an unexpected disappointment.
