DJI Announces the Osmo Plus, the First Handheld Gimbal With Zoom

Today DJI is adding an upgrade to their Osmo handheld gimbal with the new Osmo Plus. The Osmo+ features a 3.5x optical zoom camera with an extra 2x digital lossless zoom (while shooting 1080p), which gives it a 22-77mm focal length. Now available for $649 on the DJI website, the Osmo+ is an $80 increase of price over the regular Osmo handheld gimbal.

DJI states that this new camera is “similar to, but not interchangeable with, the new Zenmuse Z3 zoom camera” that is compatible with the Inspire 1 drone. Senior Product Manager Paul Pan said, “The Osmo+ opens up entirely new capabilities for creators who love the Osmo’s ability to deliver crisp, sharp, and detailed handheld imagery.” The Osmo+ camera can capture 4K video at 30fps and 1080p video at 100fps, or 12-megapixel raw stills.

Other features of the Osmo+ include nine-photo in-camera stitched panoramas, a motion time-lapse function, and the all-too-important “moving selfie” mode. The Osmo+ is compatible with the DJI GO app and a host of accessories such as a bike mount and extension rod.

The optical zoom is a welcome addition for us Wedding Videographers. I just wish that the future Osmo/Zen cameras would use the bigger 1/1.7" sensors. They will only need an ever-so-slightly bigger lens and negligible size/weight hit but effectively gaining a full stop of DR and sensitivity.

Still shitty close focus distance. 1 meter is not ideal for social settings. Better then 1.5 m though.

The specs say 0.5 meters

Indeed. It said 1 meter when I wrote the comment, but I see that they've changed it now. Good!
