Fujifilm's New Bokeh Beast: Just How Good Is the XF 50mm f/1.0?

Fujifilm announced its new bokeh beast a few weeks ago, and we’re starting to find out just how well this $1,500 f/1.0 lens performs. Check out this short review to find out its strengths and weaknesses.

With a full frame equivalent of 76mm, Fujifilm’s new XF 50mm f/1.0 R WR seems ideal for portraits, offering the possibility of a super shallow depth of field that’s often judged to be missing from crop sensor systems. In this video, DPReview puts the new lens through its paces, finding some excellent results among a few inevitable flaws.

Fujifilm is said to have a few more lenses set to follow on from this new 50mm lens. Updated versions of the XF 10-24 f/4 and the XF 27mm f/2.8 pancake are expected, along with a brand new XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6. Fans might be hoping that weather-sealing is added to the 10-24mm, and the 70-300mm will be a welcome addition to a lens line-up that doesn’t have a wide choice of telephoto zooms. Others are wishing for the 27mm to be slightly faster — perhaps f/2 — and make a compromise on its tiny form factor.

The 50mm f/1.0 was originally planned as a 33mm lens, and it remains to be seen whether Fujifilm decides to update its XF 35mm f/1.4, which probably needs an overhaul. As Fstoppers’ Usman Dawood noted last year, a 35mm f/1.2 with improved autofocus would likely be appreciated, especially by video shooters.

50 @ 1.0 on a fuji would be equivalent to an 85 @ 1.6 on a FF. The fuji rig would be more expensive and heavier than the full frame and it would probably go against reason you bought the fuji in the first place.

If extreme bokeh at this focal length is what anyone is looking for id just go with a full frame and an 85, 1.2 lens. That would put this lens to shame in a bokeh battle.

Yeah this lens makes no sense but I am sure plenty of people will buy it.

Well, no. Fuji crop factor is 1.53. So it's a 76,5 mm lens and the f/ on ff eq is 1,53. I can only assume you're talking about DOF here. BUT! The amount of light gathering is the same for FF and crop. So f/1 is golden in low light for both ;)

And of course this makes sense. Because many people complain about the lack of really thin dof on crop sensors and Fuji are showing how it's possible to get that sweet bokeh. And it's not a huge lens, yes it's big, but not too bad on let's say an x-t4. Autofocus is supposedly good too. So this will no doubt come in demand. I shoot several systems and fuji lenses are the best. The fuji x series sensor isn't obviously comparable with ff nikon or sony, but the fuji lenses are just so good and get max out of that x trans sensor.
