A Harsh But Fair Review Of The Panasonic GH5

A Harsh But Fair Review Of The Panasonic GH5

There are a lot of GH5 review videos currently online but most of them are pretty lacking. Youtuber iPhonedo, just released the most complete review I have seen and it's definitely worth watching whether you own the camera or not.

If you get your feelings hurt easily you may not want to watch this video because although I find it very fair, it's also somewhat negative. Spoiler alert: he's returning his camera.

The Two Major Issues

Continuous AF is Unreliable

This is true. I've written two posts about this here and here and I've confirmed this with my camera as well. In certain situations with ideal settings it is possible to get acceptable results but most of the time in real world situations it's too unreliable to use.

Stabilization While Walking Sways from Side to Side

I have also been able to replicate this issue.

Why I'm Not Returning My GH5s

It would be nice to have a reliable AF system while recording but even if it was great, I'm not sure I would use it very often. I have never filmed a video without someone manning the camera and keeping an eye on the focus, exposure, and audio as we film. I'm hoping that a firmware update can fix this issue but I'm not too worried about it because it's not what we do.

The stabilization "sway" is strange but I was able to get a somewhat similar result with my D750. The stabilization on the GH5 is so significant that it may only enhance this issue. 99% of the time I'm not walking with my camera without a gimbal though. Instead, I'm looking to get steady looking shots hand held while im standing still. For that the stabilization is the best I have seen and when you combine it with a gimbal, it's incredible

The bottom line right now is that if you are the type of person who films vlogs and you need a camera that can automatically autofocus quickly and accurately, the GH5 probably isn't the best tool. If you're like us, and you want manual control over the focus, the GH5 is probably the best video camera currently in its class.

I just watched it this morning too! I love him!! hahaha he is always so funny. You just won't be angry at him no matter which team you're on

man I love that guy

Guy is not interesting, really. The camera is. Bet it'll be fixed overnight by Panasonic coders. And yes, every product has it's flaws on the start.

Lee did you experience the IS issues he had, with your gimbal review, on youtube?

It doesn't sway on a gimbal

I don't know why but I'm just waiting for him to start talking with a normal native English accent. Like this famous Russian, not, American. ⬇️ 😁

Fun video. Thanks for posting.

Haha I had no clue that guy wasn't Russian

Holly crap, I am Russian and he had me fooled too!

"I've written two posts about this here and here and I've confirmed this with my camera" I think you forgot to put two links here, but I might be wrong.

Whoops you're exactly right

Wow that AF system doesn't have ADD, or even ADHD; it has AD4K.

iphonedo is hilarious-one of the main criteria for me picking up the GH5 would be improved video AFC over my GH4. Sure hope Panasonic can improve on this post launch.
