How Does the Canon EOS R5 Compare to the 5D Mark IV?

Canon has indicated that the EOS R5 is essentially a mirrorless replacement for the 5D Mark IV, which is one of Canon's most popular DSLRs and the workhorse of choice for a wide variety of photographers across lots of genres. If you are one of those people and wondering how the EOS R5 compares, check out this comprehensive video review.

Coming to you from John Gress, this excellent video review compares the Canon EOS R5 to the 5D Mark IV. No doubt, the 5D Mark IV is a very well-balanced camera, but the EOS R5 really steps up another level, at least according to its specs on paper, which include:

  • 45-megapixel sensor
  • 12 fps continuous burst rate with mechanical shutter, 20 fps with electronic shutter
  • 5-axis in-body image stabilization
  • 1.053 AF points with Deep Learning technology that offers improved tracking and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
  • High-resolution 5.76m-dot electronic viewfinder with 120 fps refresh rate
  • 3.2" vari-angle rear touchscreen
  • Native ISO range of 100-51,200 (expandable to 102,400)
  • 8K raw video at 30 fps, 4K video at 120 fps
  • 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
  • Weather-sealing

Altogether, the EOS R5 looks to be a highly capable camera for a wide variety of shooting scenarios; check out the video above for Gress' full thoughts.

Who's going to watch 40mn of a guy talking nonstop to answer that question?

I didn't watch, but I did listen at 1.5x speed why I did other things.

Thank you for this informative and helpful video! My R5 finally arrived and I'm just enjoying getting used to it. The eye detection and AF in general, to me, is the biggest and most exciting leap forward from the 5d MK IV. I can't spring for a 2nd R5 as a backup so if you have any thoughts you are willing to share on a good backup camera that would be appreciated. I am also going to sell my Mk IV because I purchased the R 24-70 lens and the lenses are not backwards compatible.
