The new Pentax DSLR that fans have waited years for has reportedly moved past the drawing board and into production. A Japanese insider says the camera is being built now, though no launch date has been confirmed.
The claim comes from a report by Digital Camera World, which points to social media comments from Ricoh/Pentax insider Kimio Tanaka, shared by Pentax Rumors. Tanaka doubled down on his earlier reports, saying production has already started, while noting it is still unclear which exact model is being made. The outlet says a timeline can't be inferred, but a launch later in 2026 is conceivable, and the body is expected to be a successor to the full frame K-1 Mark II.
Keep the hedges in mind. This is an insider report, not an official Ricoh announcement, and there is no spec sheet, price, or ship date. Tanaka has a track record of accurate calls on the company's plans, and his comments line up with earlier signals. Back in April, Ricoh and Pentax executives went on the record in an interview with Spanish site Photolari, saying they will not abandon SLRs. In that interview the executives said, "We will never give up if there are customers," and confirmed an active internal project for a new Pentax DSLR. So the pieces fit, but "in production" from a leaker is not the same as a camera you can order.
Pentax is the last major brand still actively developing DSLRs. It has been six years since Canon and Nikon launched their last DSLRs, the EOS-1D X Mark III and the D6. Pentax's own cadence has been slow. The full frame K-1 II dates to 2018, and the APS-C KF from 2022 was essentially a rebadged K-70, a design that goes back to 2016. On top of that, Ricoh ended production of the K-3 Mark III in Japan in January 2025, and the niche K-3 Mark III Monochrome later sold out and was marked as discontinued at major retailers. A genuinely new body would be the first in a while that isn't a warmed-over refresh.
Nobody yet knows whether this is a full frame K-1 III, an APS-C K-3 successor, or something else entirely. The market is tiny. By one industry estimate, DSLRs are roughly 10% of camera sales, and Canon dominates that slice, which leaves Pentax serving a small, loyal base rather than chasing volume. That is the whole strategy Ricoh has described: meaningful upgrades for existing users, not a fight with Sony or Nikon, and Pentax users are some of the most loyal you'll find anywhere.
Given the size of the market, the arrival is more consistent with a refresh or reworking of an existing design than a ground-up, next-generation platform. Hopefully, we'll hear more soon.

Pentax used to arguably have the best sensors in the business (for a short window of time, back when they were selling the K-01, the K-1, and the K-1 II). I bought the K-01 (an early mirrorless experiment) when it was released, based on the reviews of its sensor and the extremely low cost of entry. That their mount hadn't changed in decades, and that there was plenty of old, used, high quality glass available at places like craigslist and ebay, for a song — only reinforced my decision to buy the K-01.
Once I started buying lenses, and that the mount still hadn't changed, I also bought the K-1 II, when it hit the market. The K-1 II was a comparably low-cost entry point into FF digital. I have to say I've grown to really like my Pentaxes, and I have quite the collection of old, really good glass.
I'm excited that there could be a new body on the horizon. I hope it's FF, and I hope that is has a minimalist set of controls and menus. A DSLR wouldn't bother me in the least. Keeping my fingers crossed. Go Pentax!
I've always loved the K-1; it's still one of my favorite cameras I've reviewed. I would love to see a new version.
The K-1 is so brilliantly designed, it's still a fantastic camera by today's standards, with outstanding image quality and a host of features that exceed those of its rival cameras, including the ability to track stars via Astrotracer, outstanding weather-sealing, and all sorts of other things. And did I mention the outstanding image quality?
That said, I'll believe it when Ricoh officially announces it. I've heard too many rumors to get TOO excited over this. And I also hope that it's FF. Fingers crossed!!
Regardless of what the photography bubble thinks, Ricoh-Pentax already has one leg in the coffin. They're only kept alive by Ricoh's GR camera sales. Pentax released phenomenal cameras, but their problem is they're bulky, and they have only a very small and overpriced lens range. This new camera is basically a dead-on-arrival that should've been released years ago.
Why would anyone outside the"photography bubble" even care?
The death of Pentax would say more about cameras in the age of smart phones than it does about Pentax, specifically.
Maybe I'm a fanboy, but Pentax has earned my respect as one of the great camera manufacturers of all time. I really hope the brand survives.
Been shooting with Pentax cameras since the late sixties, which makes me a very loyal customer, using two different film cameras and two DSLR, including the K1mii. All produce excellent images as long as I have my act together. I hope to see an updated version of the K1mii (better auto focus, better sensor, better write speed) in the near future.
The compatibility of lenses was a big consideration for me as a long time Pentax user, there is still a large amount of old compatible lass that work very well on those DSLR bodies along with some excellent modern ones.
If the new DSLR performs as hoped for, it may kick some mirror less butt
I hope it will be a K-1 III. I love my K-1 and it would be awesome to relegate it to become a backup to a K-1 III.
Keeping my fingers crossed that any denoising will be optional.
I've learned not to get my hopes up when there is yet another rumor about a Pentax camera. I'll believe it when I see it's actually shipping. That said, I'd be very interested in a K-1 Monochrome...
