Leica Launches Its First Wide-Angle Lens in the SL-Summicron Lens Series, APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH

Leica adds its first true wide-angle lens, APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH, which joins APO-Summicron-SL series lens range.

The SL-System lenses are known for their fast, top-level optical performance, and reliable autofocus. The newly released APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH lens is joining the series which has already existing 35, 50, 75, and 90mm lenses, featuring the same dimensions and filter size as its relatives in the range. The 28mm angle of view makes the lens particularly suitable for reportage, interior, and architectural photography.

As a result of using precise manufacturing methods and measuring technologies, Leica has produced lenses that are more compact, lower weight, while still developing excellent image performance. When working on the construction of this lens range, particular attention was paid to ensure that stray light and reflections are prevented by applying a high-quality coating to the lens surfaces. These lenses are durable due to their sealing against dust, moisture, and water spray. Aquadura coating covers the exposed lens surfaces, making these lenses suitable for heavy use in unfavorable weather conditions. The lens comes in a black anodized finish.

APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH features apochromatic correction. In regards to the autofocus drive, all of the Summicron-SL range lenses use stepping motors with Dual Syncro Drive. This allows the autofocus to travel the entire focusing range in approximately 250 milliseconds. Manual focusing has not been forgotten either; this range of lenses features an entirely new manual focus ring construction in the form of an embedded ring magnet with alternating north-south polarization. As you turn the focus ring, the magnetic field changes its polarity. This is monitored by a sensor, which then sends the data to the main processor. This process makes manual focusing faster and more precise.

APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH is compatible with cameras made by other partners of the L-Mount Alliance that have been equipped with the Leica-developed lens mount. You can purchase it for $5,195.
