When you photograph in a studio you have the luxury of having an abundance of electrical power, access to bigger monitors, and grip equipment for your computer devices. The newest 17-inch LG gram is a compact-body laptop in the 15.6-inch class. It weights only 1,340 grams and allows you to have a similar experience not only in studio, but also on location.
We all know that on location we tend to use tools that require less power because we don't want to carry heavy batteries and generators. Having more power means adding more weight to the gear we use. That's true for our cameras, lights, storage, and computing devices. However, there are companies that come up with solutions that sometimes are hard to believe they exist. LG released the lightest 17-inch laptop in the world that has a battery life of up to 19.5 hours. This makes it possible to go on a location, carry a big-screen device, shoot tethered, edit the images, and all that without plugging the computer to an electrical outlet. A true photographer's dream come true.
Together with the announcement of the new laptop, LG launches a series of contests where it will give away more than 100 prizes. Some of them include will get a 17-inch LG gram!
Display
The laptop has a big 17-inch WQXGA IPS display with a native resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 pixels which is a 16 by 10 ratio. It covers 96 percent of the sRGB color space. The brightness of the display is estimated at 300 nit which makes it one of the brightest on the laptops market. This means it is usable even in bright daylight.
Battery
LG claims the computer can last up to 19.5 hours after a full charge with its 72 watt/hour lithium battery, which battery is compliant with the carry-on airport policies.
Size and Weight
The nano carbon magnesium body of the laptop as dimensions of 380.6 x 265.7 x 17.4 millimeters (about 15.0 x 10.5 x 0.7 inches) and weights only 1,340 grams (about 2.95 pounds). The size of the machine is smaller than other 17-inch laptops.
Memory and Storage
The base configuration comes with 8 GB of DDR4 RAM that you can upgrade to 16 GB. You can choose between configurations with 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1,024 GB SSD disks.
CPU and GPU
The laptop comes with an 8th generation Intel i7 processor which makes it fast for images processing. The GPU is an Intel UHD Graphics.
Ports and Extras
There is one USB Type-C port, three USB 3.1, one HDMI, standard HDMI, Ethernet, microSD, headphones and microphone combo port. The machine has a Fingerprint ID interface for faster authentication.

This is the contest with the biggest prize: a 17-inch LG gram to each of three selected winners. The contest will take place on Instagram. You have to upload an image onto your public account using a forced perspective as a creative tool. This image has to present a concept of one of the key features of the LG gram:

- Small weight of the laptop;

Could someone please test an eGPU on this thing? Since there's no dedicated GPU but LG includes Thunderbolt 3, it's kinda a no-brainer - yet all the reviews completely skip this test!
Erm… no... Poor screen.. how about 98% of adobe 1998.. 16gb of ram would be a minimum for me.. no discrete gpu, not the end of the world but a NVidia card would be good. Battery life will be horse s**t as if you run it hard on the cpu, the runtime will plummet.... How about a Lenovo Thinkpad P1 with a 10bit, 4k, 400 nits, 98% adobe 1998 display, 64gb ram, NVidia Quadro P2000, 2TB SSD storage etc :-)
If you want an Adobe RGB monitor, you get a dedicated monitor, not a laptop screen that's designed to help you get the job done on location. Battery life is fine when you use it for retouching and working with efficient applications such as Capture One (not Lightroom that will probably drain whatever you have very quickly).
On Macs they switch the GPU off when running on battery. Guess why.
For me, the first thing I look for is 1) four or six cores 2) dedicated video memory (even 1-2 G) and 3) ability for 32 G of RAM. So I think I'll pass on this one.
this looks promising.. currently working with a 14" AMD A9, 8GB, 120GB SSD on the go, the performance/weight is good for my need, and this LG looking great

I was just thinking about Apple's old 17" MacBook Pros. Those things were so heavy! Basically a desktop that happens to have a battery.
Yeah. And when on battery it usually (if using the default setting) switches to using the CPU only, not the GPU which may drain the battery much faster.

That's very common for such contests. When you post the image and you win, your image will be displayed on many places and you have to give permission for that. If you don't win, it's less linkely to be used.
