Lomography Launches Kickstarter for the New Lomo'Instant Automat Camera

Lomography, makers of fun film cameras and cool vintage lenses, has just launched a Kickstarter for their latest instant camera, the Lomo'Instant Automat. The Automat is the second generation of the Lomo'Instant camera and offers updates and improvements over the company's original instant camera that they successfully Kickstarted over two years ago.

Whether or not it's a great camera remains to be seen (though Lomography has a pretty stellar track record), but the style of the Automat can't be denied. Lomography is offering their new camera in four distinct colors and styles to match whatever your personal aesthetic may be.

so stylish

Lomography is touting the Automat as an "everyday" camera, emphasizing the intelligence of their automatic exposure system to get the settings right so that you can just shoot.

There are no rights or wrongs in instant photography, and that’s why Lomography has created the ultimate automatic camera. All of the technical stuff is taken care of so that you can focus on exploring your imagination, immersing yourself in the bustle around you, and sharing your happiest moments. Each Lomo’Instant Automat comes with creative tips to kickstart your imagination, but there are no restrictions. Create your own universe, be someone else for the day, and change the world as you know it there are no mistakes, only lessons.

I tend to be pretty hesitant about auto modes on instant cameras; I've yet to find an instant camera that really nails an auto exposure mode, so Lomography's exclusion of full manual controls is a little concerning. Most of us aren't shooting an intstant camera because of the image quality, but a completely blown out image is extra disappointing with film. If the Automat can really provide consistent results in auto mode, that would be pretty huge for this sweet-looking camera.

The Lomo'Instant Automat makes use of popular Fujifilm Instax Mini film. This is an ideal film for instant cameras since it keeps the size of the actual camera down while still offering a really great, fun-sized print.

In addition to the Automat, Lomography is also releasing a set of three additional lenses for added image control; a close up, a wide angle, and a fisheye attachment. The camera's built in lens is a 35mm equivalent, but these attachments should open up a wider range of creative possibilities.

Some of the Automat's fun innovative features include a selfie remote integrated into the lens cap of the camera, unlimited multiple exposures, an LED exposure counter, and interchangeable color gels for added special effects.
