A Review of the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens

A good macro lens is one of the most versatile optics a photographer can own, suitable for anything from macro work to creating ultra-sharp portraits. If you are a Nikon shooter, check out this great video review of the AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens.

Coming to you from Christopher Frost, this excellent video review takes a look at the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens. Along with being great for macro work, I have written before about how my Canon macro lens is my most trusted portrait lens, and with very similar specs, similar things could be said about Nikon's version. On top of that, a sharp macro lens is often much cheaper than a premium portrait lens. The Nikon version comes with a variety of great features, including:

  • One extra-low dispersion element for reduced chromatic aberrations and increased clarity
  • Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating for reduced flares and ghosting and increased contrast
  • Silent Wave Motor with full-time manual focus override
  • Vibration Reduction offering up to three stops of compensation
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm for smoother bokeh

Altogether, the 105mm f/2.8G looks to be a very useful lens. Check out the video above for Frost's full thoughts.

A-a-a-a-a-a-a-nd... still no Z mount macro lens. Yes, I know about the adapter, thanks. It's been 2 1/2 years now.

Have you tried the Meike MK-Z-AF1 extension tubes? They pair well with the existing Z primes and have AF passthrough if required.

I'm already using a tube with the z mount 24-70. It works, supports focus stacking with AF. I'd like a 105mm for the working distance, seems somehow silly to buy a prime just to use for macro, but that is an option.
