Sony Confirms the a7S III Is Finally on Its Way

The Sony a7S II was a popular camera, but photographers and filmmakers have been waiting for the third iteration in the series for a few years now, with some beginning to wonder if it will ever make it to the market. The good news is that Sony has confirmed that we can expect the a7S III later this year with some major changes.

In a recent interview with DPReview, Kenji Tanaka, VP and Senior General Manager of Sony's Business Unit 1, discussed a wide range of topics about the company and its future, including the a7S III, which we will see later in the summer. The original a7S and a7S II were quite groundbreaking at the time of their releases, but in the meantime, various manufacturers have released some spectacularly impressive cameras, so it will certainly be interesting to see what Sony has planned for the third version. Although Tanaka did not confirm too many details, he did say that the camera will be a "complete redesign of the whole system, including the image sensor." Personally, given Sony's penchant for leading the pack when it comes to technological innovations, I am quite excited to see what we'll see. Check out the full interview here.

Actually, the A7sII successor is coming. Since it is completely new camera, the name might not be A7sIII.

Prediction: A7Supreme

I love how Sony makes the generations and primary purposes of their cameras as confusing and obscure as possible.

With the APS-C line there was the a6000, a6300, a6500 -- CA-CA-CA-CA-COM! CA-CA-CA-CA-CA-COMBO BREAKER! -- a6400, a6100, then a6600. I honestly expect the next to be the a6304.

The a7 series is worse. As far as I know, Sony never laid out which camera was optimal for a photographer's needs. Some guy on youtube explained the a7III is a photo/video hybrid, the a7SII is video-centric, the a7RIII / IV is best for photography with large prints and crops, and the a9 series are professional sports cameras. Cannot even trust that is correct.

Given how well the a7SII performs I can see why filmmakers are eyeing the successor. I'm just waiting for Sony to throw out a major curveball with it.

.

Yeah, the a7S III coming out after the IV? I was confused by the headline. You'd think they could just go in simple numerical and alphabetical order. ABC, 123,... how hard it that?

When Sony announces a product is coming without further details, you praize them without a single doubt. When Canon does the same, you already assume it will be shit. That's very poor journalism...

Sure, but can it run Crysis?
