What Is the Best Affordable f/2.8 Standard Zoom for Sony?

Not too long ago, any Sony shooter wanting an f/2.8 standard zoom would have only a single option. Thanks to Sigma and Tamron, there are now three more to choose from. Which of these more affordable options is the best?

The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM is now a bit long in the tooth, having been released in early 2016 and potentially due for an overhaul. In the last few years, Tamron has had a huge impact on the Sony system by introducing a best-selling standard f/2.8 zoom, bringing intelligent compromise and dramatic savings in terms of price and weight. Since then, Sigma has followed suit, not once, but twice, having just released its own compact alternative: the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8.

Respected lens reviewer Christopher Frost has put together an excellent overview of how three lenses compare: the brand Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary ($899), the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD ($879), and the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art ($1,099). I'm glad I'm not in a position where I have to try and choose between these three, as it's quite a tough decision. Personally, I think I'd save up the extra for the Sigma 24-70mm, as while I love to travel light, having that extra 4mm at the wide end would make a big difference for me.

Which would be your choice? Let us know in the comments below.
