Come Prepared to Landscape Photography or Suffer the Consequences

Coming unprepared to one of the most epic landscape photography locations in Europe is not a good idea. It will make you rely on a combination of gut feeling and luck.

Luck is of course a huge factor in landscape photography and some of my best photos has been pure luck because of unpredictable weather and light. However, I do try to minimize the element of luck as much as possible.

In the above video, I go to one of the most famous and characteristic landscape photography locations in all of Europe. Tre Cime di Lavaredo are three gorgeous mountain peaks in the Italian Dolomites. Before my tour, which were planned and pre-booked by my friend and travel companion Kai Hornung, I had not really seen that many photos from Tre Cime. I had been busy planning my other tour through Britain and did not spend much time planning this part of the tour. Without any research of the area or pre-visualizing any photos, I did not know what to aim for and wandered around listening to my gut feeling. With our time limited to one afternoon and one morning, coming unprepared turned out to be a big mistake.

Looking back at the experience, I would have made some very different choices. Check out the video above and let me hear if you have ever come unprepared to a landscape photography location. What did you make of it?

So you have an excuse to go back.

I call that a win :)

Planning is a fun part too i think. I really enjoy previsualization of images at a certain location. But I guess you must adapt to the conditions as well. Not everything goes as planned :)

That was a great trip with you, guys! Next time will be even better because we will know what to focus on.
A tipp for all readers: sometimes you find yourself in unknown waters and you still want to get the most out of it. I suggest lowering expectations (something that’s really hard for myself) and use your mobile phone for research on the spot or on the way there. With known locations like this you will find some helpful advice. Especially when reaching out to people who have been there. And I know Mads would have done all of that hadn’t he felt the weeks of touring the UK already. That strain makes you loose some grain. So Resting and taking things easy is another helpful advice when being on long tours.
Let’s get back there!

What an amazing place

The moral of the story is that if you don’t come prepared to landscape photography be prepared to do a video about not being prepared ....

Please consider this video, when you will use your drone in the Alps or Dolomites... there are daily emergency rescues here around at every time.
