Helpful Tips for Using a Telephoto Lens for Landscape Photography

A telephoto lens can be a fantastic if underused tool for landscape photography. This fantastic video tutorial will give you some great tips for using one to expand your creative palette a bit.

Coming to you from Michael Shainblum, this excellent video tutorial discusses some helpful tips for taking better landscape images when using a telephoto lens. In this case, Shainblum is using a 70-200mm. The great thing about landscape photography is that you really do not need an f/2.8 version of the standard 70-200mm; instead, save your money and your back and get a smaller and cheaper f/4 version. It is well worth keeping one in your bag; undoubtedly, most landscape photography is done with a wide angle lens, but for picking out individual details, creating more abstract images, or simplifying your compositions, adding a bit more focal length can make a big difference. It is a great way to make your photos stand out from the crowd too, given how many landscape photos are shot around 24mm or so. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Shainblum.
