National Geographic Photographer Offers Tips for Natural Light and Travel Photography

Whenever we travel and have our camera with us, we want to capture pictures, so any tips from a photographer who has built an established career off of just that are more than welcome!

The Advancing Your Photography channel interviews veteran photograph Bob Holmes to get some tips for natural light and travel photography. Holmes has a wealth of experience and a staggering body of work. He has lived in California since more or less when he was invited over by Ansel Adams no less, and has been establishing himself as one of the greats ever since.

What struck me as surprising and disarming about Holmes was his humility. He openly admits to having to constantly check his settings to make sure he hasn't left the ISO too high for example, as well as other mistakes we all make but don't like to admit to. Though, saying he hates strobe lights because they require vast amounts of experience to control was a little jarring. That might well have been the case some years back, but since digital and particularly in today's industry, I wouldn't say that's true. Though with Holmes stunning portfolio, I don't feel qualified to criticize his methods!

Do you travel a lot with your camera? What advice would you give someone new to it?
