10 Crucial Lighting Mistakes Beginner Filmmakers Make

While there are a lot of differences between video and photography, one fundamental truth remains: your lighting makes or breaks your creations. And just like photography, there are some common lighting mistakes that new filmmakers tend to make. This excellent video tutorial will show you 10 such mistakes and what you can do to fix them or avoid them in the first place.

Coming to you from Parker Walbeck, this fantastic video tutorial will show you 10 common lighting mistakes beginner filmmakers make and how to fix them. I think one of the most important mistakes Walbeck highlights is creating the wrong mood. When you are new to lighting, you often focus on getting the lighting technically correct, and, of course, that is an important thing to master. However, this focus can lead you to become fixated on a certain setup that you feel comfortable with. However, you have to be aware of the sort of mood that the action on screen and in the dialogue are calling for and be able to complement that with your lighting. The next time you're watching a movie, try to pick apart the way different scenes are lit and how those setups contribute to your experience as a viewer. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Walbeck.
