Samsung Galaxy Note 10 to Feature Three-Stage Variable Aperture Camera [Rumor]

While smartphone manufacturers recently have been focused on improved computational photography to advance image quality, Samsung won’t be stopping on the hardware end.

In a new rumor based on leaks from Samsung insider Ice Universe on Twitter, Samsung will be stepping up the forthcoming Galaxy Note 10’s camera by using a three-stage variable aperture. The Galaxy S9, S9+, Note 9, and the currently available Galaxy S10 and S10+ feature a dual-aperture camera, so it’s clear that Samsung has seen promise in improving this area of mobile photography. While the Galaxy S10 has apertures of f/1.5 and f/2.4, the Galaxy Note 10 is rumored to round out the middle by sporting apertures of f/1.5, f/1.8, and f/2.4.

We may be able to assume that the f/1.8 will be the optimum aperture setting, with the f/1.5 and f/2.4 apertures making small compromises to image quality in order to shoot in lower and higher light levels respectively; the usual suspects of vignetting, diffraction, color fringing and such.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is expected to arrive in early August 2019 and the Pro model may feature a triple set 12-megapixel primary camera, 12-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 16-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera.

I know that it's popular to shit on cellphone cameras, but I am very happy that phones continue to get better cameras. While I try to have my camera on me at all times, sometimes I don't and it's great to be able to whip out my phone and take some decent photos or videos of my kid when he starts to do something adorable. :)

The extra aperture is nice, but I will not buy their Note 10 unless it has the 5x optical zoom they just introduced
