How to Create Great Product Photographs With Natural Light

Product photography is a deceptively deep genre of the craft and to get the most out of it requires experience and often a lot of lighting equipment. But that isn't to say lots of lighting equipment is always necessary. Here is how one photographer uses only natural light and still gets some beautiful results.

Product photography has been a sector of this industry I have worked in extensively and I am familiar with its difficulties and intricacies. Without question, the first skill I needed to learn to improve my work — and this was before I had even considered a career in photography — was lighting. I realized after my first shot of a product that lighting was key to the commercial and professional look and so I practiced at every chance I got.

Eventually, however, I learned that while light is key, giant lights aren't always necessary. In fact, for some of my more natural images, I would use natural light from a large window and then a big silver reflector. Much of the challenge is with pleasing reflections and controlling where shadows fall and if you have access to a large window — preferably diffused with white drapes as in this video — you can sometimes create fantastic images without ever firing a flash.
