Royal Photographer Reveals the Story of How He Was Booked, Timeframe He Had to Shoot Wedding Portraits

The photographer who shot the official wedding and engagement portrait of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has spoken of the story of how he booked the job. He reveals that Kensington Palace phoned him “out of the blue” and that he had just three minutes to take the official wedding portraits.

Alexi Lubomirski says he was cold-called by the Palace, who reached out to ask if he was available to take the portraits that would accompany the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s engagement announcements. The photographer is sharing details in an Instagram post, accompanied by a black and white photo he’s not previously posted from their wedding day to mark it being two years since the phone call.

He recalls:

Two years ago today, Kensington Palace called my phone, out of the blue, whilst I was sitting in a hospital waiting room, waiting for a family member to wake up after a 10-hour brain surgery, to ask if I would be interested in doing a project together. Two weeks later, I was shooting the official engagement portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The next year, I was shooting the official wedding portraits at Windsor castle.

The image he posted was an outtake from a portrait session on their wedding day, taken at the Windsor Castle rose garden. He signed off the caption: “p.s. the family member is doing great!”
