Video Shows Camera Operator Hit in Head by Home Run

During the May 16 Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game, Diamondbacks left fielder David Peralta turned on a Craig Kimbrel fastball, lifting it for a home run over the right field fence. Unfortunately, the ball came down on the head of a camera operator standing on top of the outfield wall.

The incident happened this week during the Diamondbacks and Dodgers game. In the top of the 9th, David Peralta took a 96 mph Craig Kimbrel fastball deep to right field, clearing the wall by about 10 feet for a two-run home run. The camera operator in the outfield saw the ball coming and tried to duck, but the ball still took a glancing blow off the operator's head. Those in the camera bays and otherwise near the field are often put in the line of danger, and it is far from the first time a camera or camera operator has been struck by a ball. Major League baseballs are extremely hard, and Peralta's home run left his bat at 97 mph, making it quite a dangerous projectile as it came back toward Earth. Thankfully, it seems to have been a glancing blow, and hopefully, the camera operator is ok.
