Vintage Fashion Backstage

Another image from my shoot at a 1929 cinema palace in Jersey City, NJ. This view of the fashion model posing in sparkling evening gown is at the theatrical pin rail, the riggings for curtains and other theatrical set pieces backstage.

In preparing for this shoot I spent numerous Saturday afternoons at the theater doing volunteer work on the restoration. I always felt like the pin rail was a traditional visual icon of the theatrical backstage which has not fundamentally changed in the last century. It seemed like a natural to use it in creating a retro feeling.

The tech for this shot is rather simple. One Profoto strobe firing into extra-large Plume Wafer soft box at side of model. Nikon D810 w/ Zeiss Otus 55mm. I got the model from NYC agency. I had both a stylist and a HMU artist at the shoot.

Black and white conversion with Nik Silver Efx Pro2.
