This Photographer is Capturing COVID-19's Effect by Driving Across America

The best photojournalism is usually produced during the worst times. This photographer has chosen to drive across America during COVID-19 to capture its effects on America from his car.

I, like many who read the title, will become a touch uncomfortable about someone going out to photograph people during COVID-19, particularly in a country that has been hit harder than most. However, Brian Bowen Smith does keep social distancing in mind and the images are taken from his (frankly awesome) 1958 Ford F-100.

The project started with him driving past his neighbors' house to take a portrait of their family through the window. When he and his wife saw the results, he decided to do more of them.

The project is absolutely spectacular. Smith is a superb photographer and held in high regard, but this series transcends his usual portraiture and I couldn't recommend going through his Instagram enough. Here are a selection of my favorites from this photojournalistic road trip.
