If you're not familiar with Peter Coulson's fashion and editorial work, you have clearly been living under the proverbial rock or simply don't follow portraiture. Coulson has quickly become one of the most respected and successful fashion photographers from down under, and has been fielding an endless stream of requests to visit America. Namely, to teach his voodoo studio mastery to the masses. Thankfully, this June in Chicago and New York, Coulson is doing exactly that.
While I am proud to have worked on his June workshop project with the help of David J. Crewe of Phlearn since last year, the most exciting part for me will be simply seeing Coulson work, live and in person. There is a profound simplicity to his images, but an even more profound depth and impact that is clearly not created by simply great equipment. Like any of the greatest artists in history, Coulson crafts his images in such a way that it transcends any gear, despite the fact that he slings Hasselblad and often Profoto and Broncolor toys in studio.
To say that I'm a fanboy would be an understatement, and the dozens of Skype meetings we've had with Coulson since last year, in order to plan Chicago, furthered my fanboyism. The fact is, Peter Coulson is not only a world class photographer and artist, but also a fantastic human being. Coulson is always on, in that he could shoot 16+ hours a day without any hesitation, and often does for days on end.
He's a bit passionate.
While 95% of his work is in black and white, Coulson is a master at what he does even on the occasional color image. Here again, gorgeous simplicity is his staple - something I could definitely learn from in my own work.
Coulson will be showcased at the all-new Phlearn studio in Chicago on June 20-21 for what will be an amazing weekend I am sure, supported by Hasselblad and Zeiss. Join us for info and discussion about the Chicago class is in the Facebook group.
Registration for the Chicago workshop is here.
Not to mention his New York workshop, which I am looking to also attend, also supported by Hasselblad, Zeiss and Broncolor.
Registration is open for the New York classes here.

I'm beyond excited for this! I've been a huge fan of Peter's work for ages!
Same!!
I'm tapped out on my workshop funds but this guy is INSANELY GOOD!! Every time he posts in image my jaw drops. Furthermore he always ends up with shots that are extremely tasteful despite being semi nude....a lot of photographers go for shock value instead in that department.
Big fan of this guy!
Such a shame, man! Will be awesome!
No doubt it will be.....please keep us updated about it. I hope some folks on FStoppers are kind enough to post some BTS shots or something.
Huge fan of Coulson! I wish I had more time to stack some chips for this class! I would have totally gone!
I hear you - this all wrapped up kind of last second. But going to amazing.
I don't doubt it brother...I'm making the moves to try and attend! It'd be awesome to meet you guys and learn from the great minds of our industry!
He is truly a great master.
I have long been fascinated by pictures of Peter Coulson.
I took his natural light workshop in Sydney. So good and he's so open about anything. He is one passionate guy and his work speaks for itself. I can't recommend him enough - save your cash and go.
Oh I bet! And I agree 100%
PLEASE come to europe!!!
Outstanding event I wish I had time to attend this amazing workshop
As someone who has done a number of workshops with Peter, I can offer nothing but the highest praise for this amazing artist. He demystifies his approach and is extremely generous with his time. What he can do with one light is truly eye opening.
He also happens to be a great guy. I took shots during his workshops that even surprised me. Anyone who participates in his workshops will come away with a wealth of information and very inspired.
Nino, Any updates on the New York workshop? Not much information on it yet.
