10 Quick Steps to Creating Successful Portrait Poses

When it comes to portraits, things like light placement and camera settings are quantifiable and in that sense, more easily learned than something a bit more nebulous, such as posing. If you have been struggling with posing your subjects, this great video tutorial will break it down into a 10-step process that will make it more digestible and easy to implement.

Coming to you from Jay P. Morgan with The Slanted Lens, this excellent video tutorial will show you a 10-step process for posing portraits. Posing is something a lot of photographers struggle with, and having a way to break it down can make you a bit more confident when you are on a shoot. Of the steps, one that I think is particularly important is remembering not to hide behind the camera and to keep engaging with your subject. Particularly when you are new to photography, you can end up hyper-focused on your camera during a shoot, and while that is understandable, it is important to remember that your subjects are likely just as uncomfortable on the other side of the camera, and it is your job to make them feel at ease. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Morgan.

What I have recently found amusing is that with good to great photography poses is that if you are simply sitting and talking with someone in these poses, you'd find it really bizarre that they would be positioning their body that way! lol
