Just the Two of Us by Klaus Pichler: Costumes and the Lives Behind Them

Just the Two of Us by Klaus Pichler: Costumes and the Lives Behind Them

Around the world people participate in dressing up in cosplay, LARP, Star Wars characters, Medieval Knights and many other fascinating characters. They live in a fantasy world in their costumes but they also lead normal, day to day lives. When you think about it, rarely do you get to connect their two identities and Klaus Pichler did just that in his newest project titled Just the Two of Us.

People spend thousands of dollars on their hobbies, much like most of ours is photography. Usually, the people we know, see how much overlap there is with our creative outlets and daily lives. But in these fantasy worlds, some of these people are completely disconnected with their  lives and do it in complete secret. I myself have never had the desire to participate in this fantasy world that people create, but I find the idea behind it amazing and unique. Klaus' project statement describes the essence of what he wanted to portray perfectly. The juxtaposition of the entire project was perfectly executed, so be sure to check out the full set.

Klaus is no stranger to Fstoppers. He was featured back in 2012 for his work with rotting food. He has some amazing projects on his website as well as a recently released, self-published, book called Skeletons in the Closet.

Brilliant concept, perfect execution! The photos are fascinating, yet disturbing. I like the way they appear to cross all socioeconomic barriers and in many cases, the costumes appear to be almost polar opposites of their surroundings. You learn so much about your subjects, even though they are hiding behind their masks. Like Sarah, I have no desire to dress up like this, but it's a really interesting subject matter and Pichler's photos are remarkably interesting.

That dragon cosplay; nicely done. Jaken, on the other hand, is terrifying.

Brilliant photos and costumes!

Stephen Schofield did this same project years ago called Land of the Free. Check it out
