Spoiler-Free Star Wars Portraits from Time Magazine

Spoiler-Free Star Wars Portraits from Time Magazine

I have been unfailing in my anti-spoiler vigilance. I haven't watched previews, I haven't read articles, I haven't clicked links. A trailer came on during the finale of Fargo Monday night and I ran from the room with my hands over my ears. I'm taking this seriously. So it was with much trepidation that I finally clicked on this link I've been seeing around for Time Magazine's cover photos featuring the world-renowned R2-D2, and the king of the Weeble Wobbles BB-8.

Time tapped celebrity photo-stud Marco Grob to photograph the once and future stars of the Star Wars franchise, and he nailed it.

For me, Star Wars is much more than only a film,” Grob says. “Star Wars is hundreds of people who try to push the envelope. People who take enormous risks in creative and in technical aspects. They try to do things we’ve never seen before in a way nobody would have imagined to ever see before. And for me, it’s incredible.

Check out this behind scenes video of the photo shoot that Time put together.

Here are some of the still from the shoot as well. Grob shot these in October and November in locations ranging from LA, New York, London, and Spain. Weapon of choice? A Hasselblad H4D-60 and 80mm lens

I can't lie guys, I am so hyped. I have my tickets for me and my wife for the first showing Thursday, I've got my Jedi robes and lightsaber, I've got pent up hopes and dreams that this might finally be the Star Wars movie I want and deserve. These photos are awesome, and I am desperately hoping that the film will be too. May the Force be with you.

I really dig his style. Super technical and precise lighting, great use of color that's not garish but not timid.

I totally agree, especially the last shot, the one of J. J. Abrams. It's a style of portrait that I wouldn't have dared to try, which is a shame.

Right? That Abrams shot just has me wowed. I'm sure I could recreate it, but I don't think I would have thought to shoot it in the first place without seeing Grob's shot first.

Totally. That kind of shot is one of those ones were I go "dammit, I could do that, why didn't I do that?" But the fact is — I didn't.

Hmmm ... i do not like the light setup connected to choice of background color....looks really distracting

Dammit JJ, quit editing your own photos!

i met this photographer in Zürich 2 years ago and he is quite awesome, i love his style and he seems really friendly, happy to see his picture for TIME magazine ! :-)

The lighting in the portraits are impressive and powerful.
