The Fstoppers Flash Disc Portable Light Modifier

The Flash Disc (patented) is a simple but extremely versatile light modifier for small speedlights. Lee Morris's original idea was to have a small portable softbox on him at all times during his weddings. What makes the Flash Disc so useful is it literally folds up like a reflector and can fit into your pocket, jacket, roller bag, or backpack. The unique design allows your portable flash to "bounce" up and fill the entire circular chamber crating a quality of light that is much softer than your speedlight's small opening.

UPDATE: We currently have a new large shipment that is being fulfilled through Amazon
After 6 years, a 2 year patent process, and nearly 18 months of designing proto types, the Fstoppers Flash Disc has finally become a reality. Our home made versions of the Flash Disc have been in our bags for almost our entire careers, and we are excited to finally release this flash modifier out to the general public!

Easily collapses into a pocket sized pouch

Pocket Sized

The Flash Disc (patented) is a simple but extremely versatile light modifier for small speedlights. Lee Morris's original idea was to have a small portable softbox on him at all times during his weddings. What makes the Flash Disc so useful is it literally folds up like a reflector and can fit into your pocket, jacket, roller bag, or backpack. The unique design allows your portable flash to "bounce" up and fill the entire circular chamber crating a quality of light that is much softer than your speedlight's small opening.

Portable
Unlike traditional softboxes, the Flash Disc is very portable and has an extremely small profile. This makes it easy to move through large crowds like you would find at an event or a wedding. Long gone are the days of raising bulky softboxes over people's heads or accidentally bumping your umbrella on a light stand into guests at a wedding. The Flash Disc can easily be held by your side and takes up about as much space as a hardcover book.

Easy and Portable Off Camera Lighting

Usefullness
Here are some of the situations in which we have found the Flash Disc to work best:

  • Great for small product shots where large softboxes are often overkill
  • Perfect for impromptu group shots when you want soft directional light
  • Nice when you want your key light softer than a barebulb speedlight but more contrasty than a huge softbox
  • A fast and easy solution for detail shots such as rings, cakes, shoes, jewelry
  • Easily isolates small areas for light painting (ala Mike Kelley's technique)
  • Convenient for packing in your travel bag when you don't know what photo shoots await
  • Reliable in windy environments where traditional softboxes and umbrellas often fail
  • Extremely useful during fast paced subjects like children or toddlers.

and most importantly,

  • Invaluable when shooting by yourself and you need to hold your own off camera lighting in your left hand!

Great for Beauty and Headshots

Exclusively Available Through Fstoppers
When we first designed the Flash Disc years ago, we never intended on mass producing it and offering it to other photographers. It was simply a clever solution to a common problem we often faced.  After selling out of our first batch of 1,000 in a mere 48 hour period, we are excited to announce a much larger batch of what we are calling Flash Disc V2.   We find it useful having a bunch of these small softboxes laying around the studio and in our camera bags and I'm sure you will fall in love with this simple pocket sized light modifier as much as we have.

Sold!

Hey Patrick, I want some but I'm in Singapore. If you are going to mail this via US postal services, it should not be too big of a problem and shipping should not cost too much. I am more than happy to pay for postage if you are willing to go an extra mile for your loyal customers. Cheers !!!

It's not that we can't ship it over seas. It's that we don't want to deal with hundreds of angry photographers when their packages don't show up or take months to show up. We are trying to come up with a plan that will work for everyone and as soon as we do we will make it available to you. In 8 hours we have sold 150 of our 300 available boxes of 3. I'll keep doing research on over seas shipping and maybe we can work something out before we sell out.

Anyone who already purchased a set want to re-sell me one of your extras? I'm in the US, but just don't need 3 of these guys. And I'm already way over budget on lenses! Thanks for considering.

I'd be happy to sell you one Justsomeguy6 . . let me know

I would like to have one of those, if you have a spare one. Let me Know

I would like to have one of those, if you have a spare one.

I just want one. Can I order 1 only please?

Patrick Hall's picture

At the moment we are only selling 3 together at $33 each. One would cost $50 but we will be offering those individually when we get the next big shipment.

Is there a way of securing the "box" to the speedlite? It looks like it could slip off unintentionally.

Patrick Hall's picture

It is held in by tension with an elastic band. It's not permanently attached but it will fall off if you pull on it or strike it against something. It works well in wind though

Are there any pictures showing the results of this modifier compared to others or compared to no modifier?

I also like to see that...
But no answer from Patrick Hall :-(

We will do a full review and proper promo video once we get these in stock again. We primarily sold out of these from those who bought our wedding tutorial where we used the Flash Disc throughout the tutorial. So people have seen the results and images but when these can sell as fast as they did, we didn't feel the need to create marketing material yet. We will though no doubt

I have a wedding next Saturday (21st) There is no expedited shipping. If I ordered it today, would it arrive in time?

Patrick Hall's picture

It should arrive by the 21st. First batch went out 3 days ago, next batch goes out as soon as more USPS boxes show up (should be friday). After that point, we have enough packing materials to ship orders out every day.

Hi!

Why you don´t anwer mails... now it is to late for me to order..... :-(

the buy button says buy 3 for $100 but when I went to the check out page its 1 for $100. Did I misinterpret the deal?

steve carrillo's picture

Nice product, guys. Are these made in USA?

Would like to see examples before buying.

FStoppers. I just ordered (2) boxes of (6) units and will be happy to resell (4) units to anyone that wants them. I'll resell for $40 each and I'll ship outside the US as long as you pick up the shipping costs. Email me at jasondemoe@outlook.com if you are interested.

I would like to have one of those, if you have a spare one. Le t me know. I Can provide an US address for the same.

Thank you everyone. I should have purchased more. All of the "extra" units I purchased have been spoken for. Thank you! Jason

Hi, I'm trying to buy this for my friend in US (im in Mexico), but the checkout process don't ask for my address (and paypal don't allow me to put a US address) you only will ship to the paypal address or I can put another?

still no test images???????

Ever consider doing a version with black sides to help control the light from spilling off the sides of the flashdisc?

It would nice/great to see some sample images - people and products - when photographed with this new modifier. Hard to make a decision otherwise.

I am very bummed. I was so excited to get home and buy one right away. Its amazing how fast it sold out.

I'd love to borrow one of these and write-up a review from photojournalist's perspective. While the Gary Fong Lightsphere is a great and compact product, it does lack the soft directionality a softbox or umbrella produces up close. It's also a circle, making for nice catchlights in the eyes.

I know you guys do your own -- and great -- reviews, but let me know if you're interested in a PJ's POV. It was your testing of the Flex TT5 that got me to take the first dive. Now, I'm like 5 units-deep.

I wonder how it compares to the 8" Honl Traveller in terms of light-quality.

What are the dimensions on this? (Both folded and expanded?)

Patrick Hall's picture

12" opened and about 5" folded up

Anyone wiling to sell one of these? I'm in Maryland...

Chet Meyerson's picture

Lee mentions in the video above he uses a 'older' version at every wedding yet you never show that in the Wedding series video (the full blown series)? How come?

We do. Patrick uses it to shoot the rings.

Can I get on a waiting list or maybe pre-order?

Patrick Hall's picture

We are going to make a mailing list to keep everyone up to date. Check back in a day or so.

I would like to have one of those, do let me know if you have a spare one. I can provide an US address for shipping. Thanks GUYZ...!!

Looks awesome. I would love to add my name to a list of people that would be notified when this went on sale.

Wow, totally missed that race!! Will they be up for sale again? And if, when? Looks awesome!!

Martin Melnick's picture

I'm late to the game, but does anyone have one of these left that they'd like to sell? Thanks.

Hi! I bought the discs a week ago but had a problem with address, emailed FS twice explaining but no answer at all! So far I just know payment was done but no news, no discs, no money...

I'm wondering about shipment also. I ordered them more than a week ago and don't have mine yet. Has anyone here received theirs?

Wow totally missed this when it happened! I'd really like one of those flash discs, can you please set up the mailing list so we can be notified when more are available? I'm in Australia by the way, so couldn't order in the first round anyway :)

Fran Jackson's picture

Hi Aaron, I am in Australia and ordered 3, so have 2 spare, you interested?
Shipping was a bit expensive, but am happy just to cover my costs

Absolutely! Happy to cover costs as well. ajlowndes at gmail dot com. Thanks

Lee, et al. Got my Flash Disc(s), thanks! Used them last week on a automotive/fashion shoot for Mercedes-Benz (I am an official Mercedes-Benz photographer) and would be happy to share the results (M-B is very happy) with you. I now carry two of the with me at all times (gave the 3rd one away as a impromptu Christmas present to another shooter...)

Fran Jackson's picture

Hi guys, I am in Australia and have one flash disk for sale if anyone is interested.

Very interested. Please email me the details: jrubambe at gmail dot com

I got mine and they're really nice. I don't know what I expected exactly, but the material quality definitely exceeds whatever those expectations were!

The light is also very nice. I've only played around a little, so I don't have many examples, but here is one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dread_pirate_robert/11898224675/

that looks like a great product for photographers!
