Filmmakers have a veritable feast of cameras these days and Blackmagic are adding to it with their impressive new 6K-capable body.
Blackmagic Design has had their flag securely planted in a niche of filmmaking: they create strong spec, small-form cinema cameras that are affordable to most. They have something of a cult following for their cameras and included software (DaVinci Resolve). Their newest body is the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, and in this video by Film Riot, we get a comprehensive but condensed review.
The price of this new body is just under $2,500, but despite that, it boasts an impressive spec. Many of the perks of previous iterations of this camera are retained, such as the Super35 sensor with dual native ISO, Blackmagic raw and ProRes 422 options, a spread of resolutions, and so on. But there are also some new features to the 6K pro. Some of the most notable are the 5", semi-articulated LCD touchscreen, built-in clear, 2, 4, and 6-stop ND filters, and EVF and battery grips add-ons.
For the price, this camera more or less stands alone. It has so much going for it and the new modular features of an EF and battery grip (which significantly improves the battery life) mean it is even more flexibile. As is mentioned in the video, it is of course not perfect and lacks a few features that many of us have come to expect (namely IBIS), but it is without question an impressive camera for videographers and well worth a look.
"have come to expect (namely IBIS)." Yeah those Sony features they use in all movies and tv productions. I heard they used it on Justice League. They had Superman eye AF. IBIS was also used in all Bourne movie fights. Or maybe I'm wrong and it's just features that youtubers demand. I wouldn't knock points off a camera for not appealing to vloggers, I'd add points.
my only complaint about my 6k pro is the form, I wish it was square. Putting this on my rs2 gimbol is a nightmare, you have to Frankenstein cheese plates to make it work
