Perhaps the most significant compromise of this particular lens is the loss of 4mm on the wide end, but at $799 and 16.6 oz, it is significantly more affordable and lighter than many other options. It comes with some useful features, including:
- Two F Low Dispersion and two Special Low Dispersion elements for reduced chromatic aberrations
- Three aspherical elements for less distortion and sharper images
- Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous coatings for less flares and ghosting and deeper contrast
- Stepping motor for quick and quiet autofocus
- Dust- and splash-resistance

I never could understand why this lens exists. The full Sigma 24-70mm is quite affordable (compared to dedicated offerings) and is a great piece of glass without the 4mm wide angle sacrifice.
