A Review of the New Venus Optics Laowa 58mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro APO Lens

At an affordable price and with impressive magnification, the Venus Optics Laowa 58mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro APO looks like an intriguing lens. What kind of image quality and performance can you expect from it? This excellent video review takes a look.

Coming to you from Wes Perry, this great video review takes a look at the new Venus Optics Laowa 58mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro APO lens. Available for L Mount, Canon RF, Nikon Z, and Sony E, this lens fits pretty much all popular full frame mirrorless mounts, and at $567, it sits at an intriguing price. Of course, the most exciting feature is that 2x magnification, which already puts it ahead of many common macro options, making it quite an intriguing creative tool. But with a nice focal length for a huge range of applications, sharp rendering, and pleasing bokeh, this lens can cover much more than just macro subjects, making it an even better value and the type of device everyone from portrait to wedding photographers should take a look at. Of course, the one downside is the lack of autofocus, but as long as you are not photographing fast action, the robust manual focus tools of modern mirrorless cameras should make that easier to work with. Check out the video above for Perry's full thoughts on the lens.
