A Review of the Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/2 Aspherical Lens

Voigtlander is known for making rugged lenses with good image quality, and the Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/2 Aspherical is no exception to that rule. This great video review takes a look at the lens and the sort of performance and image quality you can expect from it in usage.

Coming to you from Christopher Frost, this excellent video review takes a look at the Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/2 Aspherical lens. I have always been a fan of Voigtlander lenses; the 10mm f/5.6 was an absolute joy to use, and it was, by far, the best lens I have used in the tactile sense. The 50mm f/2 offers premium image quality, including extremely sharp rendering, a 12-blade diaphragm for extra-smooth bokeh, an apochromatic designation for significantly reduced chromatic aberrations, and more. That is complemented by a declickable aperture for video work and a rugged construction with all-metal helicoid. Of course, it is worth noting that the lens is manual focus only, so if you are shooting a lot of fast action, it might not be the best choice, but for most other applications, it looks like quite the nice performer. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Frost.

Voigtlander do make superb modern manual lenses and the electronic contacts are a real bonus. I prefer their 40mm f1.2 E lens and use it as my go to street photography lens. The 50mm apo-lanthar is highly praised by those that own one for its sharpness, character and handling of chromatic aberration. I personally prefer the character from my 40mm and much prefer the focal length over 50mm though.
