Using a Corrective Video LUT Can Improve Your Video Footage

In this article you will learn how to quickly improve the look of your video footage and speed up your color grading by using a corrective lut which is also know as a look up table.

Once you have applied the lut in your video editing software, you will just need to make a few small tweaks to your footage. For this example we will be using the Leeming LUT Pro, look up table on some video footage shot with the Panasonic GH5 in V-Logl. You can also get the same lut for a variety of different cameras such as, Sony, Black Magic, Canon, DJI, Go Pro, and more.

For the best results you should refer to the PDF user guide that comes with the Leeming LUT Pro. The PDF guide includes instructions for getting the best footage possible for each picture profile you use for your particular camera model.

Once you have imported your video footage into Adobe Premiere Pro, you should then create an adjustment layer and place it just above your footage. The reason for the adjustment layer is so that you only have to add the corrective lut only once and it will apply the look to all of your clips below it.

The next step is to balance your exposure and white balance for each clip on the timeline using the Lumetri color panel. It is also a good idea to enable your Lumetri scopes to assist you in making the proper adjustment.

You can also used the supplied in camera lut that comes with the Leeming LUT Pro to give you a better idea of how your footage will look in camera. Sometimes it is hard to monitor flat looking footage in camera so make sure you experiment with the in camera LUT.

You can also use the in camera lut with a Atomos Ninja V monitor if that is your preferred method of monitoring when you are shooting your video footage. Hopefully these tips will allow you to cut down the amount of time it takes you to produce great looking video footage.
