INTERVIEWING JEAN-CLAUDE AUMONTCreative Motion Design lands an exclusive interview with photographer/cinematographer Jean-Claude Aumont. As I read Jean-Claude’s interview I found myself struck by how low key it all seemed. Most of the Top Guns in our industry never get their name in an article or their face on the cover of some magazine or have any fans at all. Living life behind the lens doesn’t exactly lend towards a lot of fame for many of us and this reminds me that being successful in this industry isn’t about any of those things. It’s about hard work, plugging away, hustling, staying current, knowing your craft, being creative and ultimately making a pay check from doing something that you love.

DIGITAL FILM CONCEPTS ARE IN DEMANDLast week we did a article on the top 5 April Fools’ Day photo pranks and amongst them was the RE-35, a cartridge that would allow you to turn your old 35mm into a digital camera. Not surprisingly the demand for this faux product was considerable and now it looks like the concept may become reality. The RE-35 site now mentions that they are looking into the feasibility of this product while Wired’s site posts on a concept product by designer Park Hyun Jin.

WHY USE A GRAPHIC TABLET?I know the graphic tablet isn’t for everyone and it takes some time to get use to. Truth be told, when I got my first pad I quit after a few hours and gave it to my wife, who happily accepted and made full use of it. That is until a year later when I had to shoot a clothing line that required a lot of outlining, dodging, spot cleaning and strokes on 100′s of frames. After a few frames of hand cramps, and nausea (from holding my breath) I decided to revisit the tablet and boy am I glad I did. If you have heavy post production workloads I can’t imagine working without one, as Pratik Naik attests to in his post, “The Importance of a Graphic Tablet in the Digital Retouching World”.

USPS USES THE WRONG PHOTOIn one of the worst cases of mistaken identity I’ve ever heard of, the United States Postal Service uses a photo of the 14 year old Statue of Liberty replica in Las Vegas in place of our very own, 125 year old, genuine article. You can read the full story through the New York Times link below but in the mean time, have you photographed any one who looks like someone famous? If you did send me a copy of your best “mistaken identity” pic and I may feature it in upcoming issues.

500px: INSPIRING PHOTOGRAPHYBefore there was Flickr (2004), there was 500px (2003), a community, for photographers, to display inspirational photos. It may not be as popular as Flickr but what 500px lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality. The stylish design and clean interface makes for a great user experience but what really stands out is how consistently they feature photography of the highest caliber. With truly beautiful and inspirational photos this site always leaves me with the feeling that I got to be a work harder, be a more prolific shooter, be more creative, be… more.

YOU CAN RENT PHOTOSHOP? This week PopPhoto.com brought us news of Adobe’s new subscription service for CS5.5. Now, I’ve never been very good at math but it seems to me that the cost of subscribing to this service would very quickly out weigh that of the full product cost. You be the judge. Is there a benefit in there somewhere?

IPHONE 4 RECORDS 360 VIDEOKickstarter.com isn’t just a great place to go to get funding for your creative projects. It’s also a great place to go to find the latest in gagets to come. Case in point, the GoPano micro. A case/lens attachment for your iPhone 4 that allows you to record 360 video. At first glance I said to myself, “I don’t want that monstrosity on my phone!” But I gotta admit, after seeing the results I found myself wanting one and you will too. If you invest in projects through Kickstarter.com you often get great deals on the products themselves. In the case of GoPano, a $50 funding will get you a pre-order of the lens, which is estimated to retail at around $80.
