Man these are so tack sharp they cut my eyeballs.

These look great I must admit. But take note that all of these images are made with an SD1 which has this awesome Foveon sensor. This sensor naturally has higher resolving power than other bayer-based sensors. So comparing this lens on this camera to other lenses on other camera's is comparing apples and oranges.

wow that's pretty damn good, especially for 899... hmmmm.... rethinking next lens purchase...

If it had an image stabiliser I would buy it, but otherwise I can't justify the price

Seriously, at f1.4, why do you even need IS?

haha, yeah really

ever considered there's people shooting video out there?

That's why you get a Sony or Pentax with sensor-shift stabilization. ;)

in lowlight.. from a car.. indoor.use and more vr os , is good for hand shake or camera shake Special for d800 hig rec sensor don't you know that ?

Dude, its 35mm f1.4 you can hand hold it down to 1/30th of a second easy and with a bit of practice you could hold it sharp even lower than that. Why would you even need IS?

As Stefano Druetta replied 3 hours before you posted this, stabilization is tremendously helpful for video.

Regardless, just shoot a decent system like Sony or Pentax where stabilization works for every lens. ;)

Yeah that A99 just keeps looking better and better.

The Foveon sensors have always produced the sharpest images pixel-by-pixel. The noise seems the same size as with a normal Bayer type sensor though. If you'd take the same images using a D800 and down scale them to 50% you would also reduce the size of the noise. Though, has to be said that the amount of noise in these images is insignificant: Very good job Sigma!

It'd be nice to see what the corners of the lens are like on a full frame body.  The bokeh with plant backgrounds are a little rough.  It's tough for any lens in those circumstances.  I think my 24mm is a little better, wonder how the Nikon 35mm would have done...

Not sold on the concept that the Foveon sensor is superior in capturing detail. Even with the file size offered here, I'm reluctant to attribute the Sigma's good performance to any particular sensor technology. The Sigma should perform nicely on any modern SLR and I'd bet a blind test would show how well this lens works on a Nikon or Canon as well without a viewer being able to see a significant difference in any. I'm glad that Sigma and other lens makers are making great lenses in the 35mm focal length that gives APS-C sensor size cameras an equivalent to the 50mm standard lenses that full-frame SLR users enjoy.

Dave, I agree with everything you're saying other than the first two sentences. Regardless of sensor used, this is clearly really nice sharp glass that'll perform well on any slr its shooting from.

That said, foveon sensors are, simply by the nature of their design, better at capturing detail, all things being equal, than bayer based designs.

The question is how good will it be out of the box. I never had luck with Sigma lenses being properly calibrated.

but with the new sigma lenses you can readjust focus using their new usb dock

Didn't know that! That's great to hear!

Zactly. Part of their quality enhancement. You can calibrate lenses to your tastes, which is quite nice.

Just a minor clarification: the usb dock thing is an additional purchase. Well worth it if you ask me. Just wouldn't want to get the idea that it's available right out of the box. :)

remember this was taken on a SD1 which is a APS-C sensor sized camera, so really can't compared edge sharpness, but either way this looks really good, i'm really looking forward to how this performs even if i may or may not buy it

I really hope they make a 24mm 1.4 in this "Art" line. That would be amazing for about $1,100.

I want a 50mm f/1.2

can't wait to match up with 5d Mk III !!!

Just purchased mine and looking forward to testing it with my 5D Mark iii
