Whenever I do a portrait, my goal is to capture the personality/lifestyle of the person in the shot. I had this shot pop into my head one day and when I called this friend (who is a 7th degree black belt) he was up to try it. The initial thought was to blow flour at him from an air cannon and have it hit his hands. However we quickly found that it wasn't giving us anything that was remotely useful. We switched gears and ended up putting together small bags of flour that he would hit and break apart into a puff. This gave me the look I had wanted.
I used a gridded kicker on camera right for the flour and to give a little life to his face. The key was an Elinchrom Octa.
