Five Great DIY Solutions for Filmmakers

Filmmaking is a wonderful thing, but it's also an expensive thing. Luckily, filmmakers are resourceful people full of tricks. This great video will give you five such tricks to get great results without spending a lot of money.

Maybe the greatest lesson I ever learned about photography is that it's really the art of problem solving. That's why I love these DIY solutions from Film Riot that can be used to recreate effects or lighting scenarios or even obviate issues of casting. My personal favorite is the shower curtain; I literally watched this video, then went into my bathroom and ripped mine down to play with it. I then went to Amazon to buy a shower curtain for my kit because I actually need the first curtain for you know, showering. While original purpose-designed equipment is always functional, it's important to remember that you can do just as well (or even sometimes better) for a much cheaper price with a bit of ingenuity. That's particularly important if you're talking about a piece of equipment that you rarely have a need for. I also find it immensely satisfying to save money with a bit of creativity. Do you have any favorite DIY tricks? Share them in the comments!
