The Wall

The old wall of Havana still surrounds parts of the city. The wall stands 30 feet tall and is around five feet thick. It was built for the purpose of protecting the people of Havana from pirates. The initial talks to build the wall took place in 1576 and was completed 182 years later. Not only did it keep many pirates from making it to shore but it helped defeat several navy's before it was deconstructed in the latter part of the 1800's due to the need for city expansion.
